Haidian district is near Tsinghua University and some other big colleges so there is a huge student music scene, one which approximates pretty much any punk/indie scene anywhere in the world. I actually prefer it to Sanlitun because in Sanlitun you might find a music club playing the ubiquitous covers of the ever-loved-by-Chinese The Eagles "Hotel California" (even 21 year olds like it, and oh gosh). I have been in several taxis where when I get in the driver fumbles through his tapes and then pops in his Hotel Calfornia tape and proceeds to ask me if I like it and I have to feign appreciation for their nod to American music....uhhh...
Yes, so Jackie and I went to D-22 in Haidian last night to listen to the 30-year tribute show to the Velvet Underground.
The Scoffs, meeehhh, okay. They did rockabilly covers, but the singer didn't really move much and it was awkward to watch, like a 7th grade talent show or somesuch.
